Do I need any prior experience to do karate?
No prior experience is required! Our club is open to beginners of all ages, whether you’re a child, teenager, or adult. Whether you're starting your karate journey or have some background in martial arts, our instructors will guide you at your own pace and ensure you feel confident every step of the way.
What age groups can join the club?
We offer classes for both children and adults. Our children’s classes are designed for younger learners (ages 5 and up), while our adult classes accommodate people of all ages, from young adults to older practitioners. Karate is an excellent activity for the whole family, and we encourage families to train together.
Is karate safe for children?
Yes! Safety is our top priority. Our classes are structured to provide a safe and supportive environment for children. We ensure that all activities are age-appropriate, and we use protective gear during sparring. Our experienced instructors teach children how to develop strength, coordination, discipline, and focus in a controlled environment.
How do I know if my child is ready for karate?
If your child is interested in learning new skills, improving focus, or staying active, karate is a great choice! There’s no need for them to be in perfect shape or have prior martial arts experience. Karate teaches children important values such as respect, discipline, and perseverance, and can help them build confidence while having fun. Our classes are designed to be enjoyable and supportive for kids of all abilities.
Our junior classes are suitable for ages 5 and up.
Is karate suitable for adults who aren't in great shape?
Yes! Karate is perfect for adults looking to improve fitness, flexibility, and strength. Many adults join our club to get in shape, relieve stress, or build self-confidence. You don’t need to be in top shape to start. Our classes accommodate all fitness levels, and we’ll help you build your strength, flexibility, and coordination gradually over time. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you improve with regular practice!
Is your club inclusive for those with neurodiversity?
Karate can be an excellent sport for those who are neurodiverse, as it allows students to progress at their own pace while providing the camaraderie of a team environment. We understand that everyone is unique, and we adapt our approach to meet the needs of the students. With the philosophy of "everyone has the opportunity to succeed" we ensure a positive and welcoming experience for everyone. Karate can improve focus, motor skills, and self-esteem, and we are here to support you.
Note, some aspects of karate can be overwhelming for those with sensory challenges, including noise and physical contact. We make every effort to ensure that accommodations can be in place if students require it, but also cannot remove some of these aspects. Please speak to our instructors if you are concerned and to decide if the environment is right for you or your child.
Can I join even if I have physical limitations or injuries?
Yes! Shotokan Karate can be adapted to meet the needs of people with physical limitations or past injuries. Our instructors are skilled at modifying exercises and techniques to ensure you’re practicing safely while still gaining the benefits of karate. If you have a specific injury or concern, please let us know so we can tailor your training accordingly.
What if I’m nervous about starting karate as an adult?
It’s completely normal to feel nervous when starting something new, especially as an adult! Many of our adult students begin with little to no martial arts experience. We understand that starting karate can be intimidating, but we promise you’ll feel welcomed and supported. Our focus is on personal growth, and we’ll help you progress at your own pace—there’s no pressure to keep up with others.
How often should I train to see progress?
We recommend training a minimum of two times per week for consistent progress. Students can attend classes at any of our dojos. Classes run:
Mondays: Cockburn
Wednesdays: Cockburn
Thursdays: Hilton
Fridays: Waroona
Will my child have to compete in tournaments?
Competition is completely optional! While we offer opportunities for students who are interested in participating in tournaments, many of our students train in karate for personal development, fitness, and self-defense. You can can progress at your own pace without the pressure to compete.
Will I be expected to spar (kumite) with others right away?
No, sparring is not required for beginners, whether you're a child or an adult. In the beginning, you’ll focus on learning basic techniques, stances, and kata (forms). Once you feel confident and ready, sparring will be introduced in a controlled, safe environment. It’s all about building your skills and confidence gradually.
What should I wear to my first class?
For your first class, comfortable athletic wear such as a t-shirt and sweatpants or leggings is perfectly fine. Once you decide to continue, you can purchase a traditional Karate gi (uniform).

We foster a welcoming, non-competitive environment where students cheer each other on and help each other succeed.
